Market interest in building a light or heavy rail link between Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station has ignited hopes of connecting the Central Business District (CBD) to the second busiest airport in Australia.
The Labor government in Victoria intends to use AUD10 million (USD7.4 million) of the money it is owed through the Asset Recycling Initiative to develop a new airport rail plan in partnership with the private sector.
The plan will undertake a detailed assessment of the best route for an airport rail link, how much it would cost, and how best to fund and deliver it.
Infrastructure Victoria identified the need for an Airport Rail Link in 15 to 30 years, and put the price of the project at up to AUD5 billion.
